The 14th Day of Morning Dew, YK 5398
As compiled by Lord Remner Van Kevlen, Royal Advisor of Magical Affairs
for King Durant de Angelosis, ruler of the Kingdom of Langington.
A mild winter in the foothills of the Kienken and Fillian Mountains
has turned into an early spring.
With Trader's Gap free from a thick snow covering, King Tearsac of the Plains, ruler of the Province of Arvandus, gave orders for his secondary host of 32,500 soldiers to proceed into Trader's Gap, all the way to the border of the Kingdom of Langinton, some twenty miles south of Durant's Hold, the military stronghold built over the last few months by King Durant de Angelosis the Fifth and his army of more than 70,000. At the same time, he ordered his primary host of over 50,000 regular infantry and cavalry, positioned along the Independent State/Arvandus border, to begin an advance into the Independent State and an assault on King Dommic Stonefast, ruler of the Dervatear nation of Tsan, and his army of 41,000 Dervatear warriors, WarPriests, and BattleMages. In conjunction with the advancement of King Tearsac's armies, some 4,500 Arvandian loyalists, positioned just outside of the Tenet Woods and along the road leading to the town of Savoy, initiated an assault against the 3,000 Dervatear warriors held up within the Tenet; however, within one day's time, the Arvandian loyalists were driven out of the Tenet Woods by the Dervatear. Finally, King Tearsac launched his entire military fleet of 98 ships--45 heavy warships, 41 light warships, and 12 large merchant ships converted into infantry transports--against Fort Tallidor, the capital city of the Kingdom of Jordyen. In all, it has been estimated that more than 50,000 sailors and marines were aboard the 98 ships that comprised the Arvandian military fleet.
All of this occurred sixteen days past, on the 30th Day of Early Dawn, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398. By the 6th Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398--only eight days after launching from Arvandus' capital city of Port Dynard--the entire Arvandian navy was destroyed by the Jordanian fleet of 258 warships. King Rhyus Gatau "The Lion," ruler of the Kingdom of Jordyen, lost only nineteen ships and some 1,300 men. To date, only 3,800 Arvandian prisoners have been recovered from the Inner Sea. After the sea battle, the bulk of the Jordanian navy, some 190 warships and led by King Gatau himself, continued south toward Arvandus and Port Dynard. On the 8th Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398, King Gatau led an assault on Port Dynard. His army of 47,500 sailors, marines, and infantry met little resistance by what was left of Port Dynard's military strength. The city fell in less than one day's time. King Tearsac of the Plains and his advisors were no where to be found.
As Port Dynard was falling under the might of King Gatau, the Dervatear army of 41,000, led by King Stonefast, was crushing the Arvandian army of 50,000. The Arvandians had attacked on the last day of Early Dawn--fourteen days past--splitting into three separate armies in hopes of catching the Dervatear off-guard: 12,500 Arvandian soldiers advanced along the coast of the Inner Sea and attacked from the north; 15,000 Arvandian soldiers cut their way through a stretch of woodland known as Einith's Bend and attacked from the south; and 22,500 Arvandian soldiers drove straight through the Independent State/Arvandus border and attacked head-on. To the Arvandian's misfortune, the Dervatear were not caught off-guard. King Stonefast had divided his host into three similar armies: 9,000 positioned to the north; 9,000 positioned to the south; and the remaining 23,000 Dervatear warriors, WarPriests, and BattleMages stationed directly in the path of the Arvandian's major advancing army.
The northern Dervatear army of 9,000 easily drove the 12,500 Arvandians north to the coastline, cutting off all hopes of retreat. The central Dervatear host of 23,000 met the 22,500 Arvandian infantry and cavalry head-on. The Arvandian army was cut down by the Dervatear to less than 10,000 before retreating back into the Province of Arvandus. King Stonefast divided the remainder of his central army, a little more than 19,000, into two units: 12,500 were to follow the retreating Arvandians into their homeland while the remaining 6,500 were to reinforce the southern Dervatear army, who were not fairing as well against the Arvandians. By the time King Stonefast's reinforcements reached the western fringes of Einith's Bend, the southern Dervatear army had been reduced to less than 5,000, while the Arvandians still maintained the advantage with more than 10,500 infantry and cavalry. By the days end, the tables had turned, and the Dervatear were able to drive back the 5,500 Arvandian soldiers that remained of their southern host.
By the 4th Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398--just five days after the Arvandian army had moved into the Independent State and against King Stonefast--the battle between the Dervatear and Arvandian forces was over. King Stonefast's unit of 12,500 in pursuit of the Arvandian army returned, less 250 warriors, claiming that they had been able to kill four Arvandian soldiers for every fallen Dervatear. The northern Dervatear army returned to the main host with 1,200 Arvandian prisoners, while the southern army brought along little more than 500. In all, 1,700 Arvandian soldiers had been captured, 13,500 had retreated back into the Province of Arvandus, and more than 34,700 had been killed. To this, King Stonefast lost some 10,500 Dervatear warriors, WarPriests, and BattleMages. By the 7th Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398, King Stonefast led his army of 30,500 into the Province of Arvandus and toward Port Dynard. King Stonefast reached the fallen city on the 11th Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398, and joined King Rhyus Gatau "The Lion" in the celebration of the destruction of the Arvandian army and navy.
As the fleet of Jordyen was engaged in battle with the Arvandian navy, and as King Stonefast and his Dervatear army were crushing the major Arvandian host to the west, King Durant de Angelosis was successfully defending Durant's Hold against the awkward assault of King Tearsac's southern army: 29,000 poorly trained infantry, 6,500 spineless orcs and goblinkind, and 119 mountain giants too concerned with their own well-being to offer any support to their fellow comrades. The Arvandian assault was a mockery played out in the foothills between the Kienken and Fillian Mountains, where the Arvandians would attack with a small portion of their army, wait till most of it was either destroyed or captured, and the retreat to form up another sizable unit. Their first assault against King de Angelosis occurred on the 3rd Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398. By the 5th Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398, and after eleven such attacks, the Arvandian army was split into four groups: 5,650 that were killed; some 7,500 that had deserted; a little more than 4,500 that had been captured; and a bit more than 19,000 that had retreated back through Trader's Gap and into the Province of Arvandus. In all, King de Angelosis lost 803 men.
King de Angelosis of Langinton was quick to pursue, driving a host of more than 25,000 through Trader's Gap and into Arvandus, heading straight toward Port Dynard. By the 12th Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398, King de Angelosis and an army of 25,000 met up with King Stonefast and his Dervatear army of 30,500, as well as King Gatau and his Jordanian army of 47,500, at the fallen capital city of the Province of Arvandus.
Two days later, on the 14th Day of Morning Dew, in the Year of Our Keeper, 5398--on this very day--negotiations between King de Angelosis of Langington, King Gatau of Jordyen, and King Stonefast of Tsan began with regards to the claim each kingdom had over the Province of Jordyen. Although some tension is evident, an amicable decision is expected between the three rulers.
To date, nothing has been seen nor heard of King Tearsac of the Plains, former ruler of the Province of Arvandus. Some believe that he escaped to the east and into the Fpathen nation of Jahhne, while others believe that he found refuge on a ship that might have brought him to one of the Arvandian Islands, or perhaps beyond. One question remains, however: Why did King Tearsac order his military strength to attack stronger and better prepared opponents? He must have known full well that his navy and southern army of 32,500 didn't have a chance against Jordyen's fleet--outnumbering the Arvandians 3-to-1--and Langington's army--outnumbering the southern Arvandian army more than 2-to-1. Furthermore, King Tearsac should have been well aware of the military prowess of Dervatear warriors, not to mention the magical powers of Dervatear WarPriests and BattleMages. Until King Tearsac is found, the reasons behind his military offensive may never be understood.
